Simply the Best Crispy Tofu

My family and I love tofu and we eat it in many different ways. When we're looking for a quick protein add, however, there is nothing as satisfying as this crispy tofu that we can make in less than 15 minutes. It's why I call it simply the best crispy tofu! One unexpected ingredient makes this a completely addicting add to everything from noodles to stir fry to sandwiches and spring rolls. Try it in my recipe for Vegan Pho (Vietnamese Noodle Soup) HERE.

How to make Simple Crispy Tofu

You only need a few things to be successful with this recipe:

  • good, firm, dry packed tofu (my favorite is this hodo tofu, but any dry packed tofu will work)
  • a non-stick pan that is big enough to cook many pieces at the same time
  • high-heat cooking oil, like vegetable oil or canola oil

If made correctly, this tofu is crispy and flavorful outside, and soft and creamy inside.

start with a good, firm tofu
slice into ¼" slices
lay out on a platter or tray
drizzle with seasonings and coat all over. let sit for 10 minutes
dredge in cornstarch, sauté in a pan with oil, flip over and repeat
crispy tofu can be eaten immediately with any condiment

Can I use Other Types of Tofu?

My preference is to use the firm, dry packed tofu, because I think it stands up better for different types of cooking. If eating the tofu by itself, a soft tofu would work great! When chopping and using in dishes where you want it to hold up and not fall apart, the firmer is the way to go. If you are using a tofu that is packed in water, be sure to drain the tofu and then press it, to remove as much of the moisture as possible. I always encourage you to try out different tofus and see which ones you like best.

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 block firm tofu like this one from hodo
  • 2 tablespoon tamari or soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoon everything bagel seasoning
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • ¼ cup cooking oil
  • chopped scallions optional, for garnish

Instructions

  • Place your tofu on a cutting board and slice into thin, ¼" slices.
  • Lay the tofu out on a platter in one, even layer
  • Drizzle the tamari and sesame oil over the tofu and then rub in with your fingers to evenly coat both sides
  • Sprinkle the everything bagel seasoning over all the slices.  Let the tofu sit this way and marinate for 10 minutes.
  • When ready to cook, heat a large non-stick pan over medium-high heat.
  • Add the oil
  • Dredge each piece of tofu in the cornstarch, covering all sides.  Tap off the excess so that it is a light dusting.
  • Place the dredged tofu into the hot oil.  Repeat until all pieces are in the pan (you may have to do this in batches, depending on the size of your pan)
  • Cook for approximately 2 minutes per side, or until golden brown.  Flip, and repeat on the other side.
  • Remove from the pan and place on paper towels to absorb any excess grease.
  • Eat immediately, sprinkled with chopped scallions, or set aside to use in another dish.
