Easy, Perfect Rice Every Time in the Instant Pot

Easy and perfect rice can be made every time in the Instant Pot. Growing up with an Asian mother, rice was always a part of meal times. I had a very specific way of measuring the water (ask any Asian, do you measure by the fingertip or by the flat palm of your hand?) and my rice was always great. That method, however, required me to watch it and pay attention to it. But then I found the Instant Pot and my life of rice making changed forever!

What is an Instant Pot and How Does it Work?

  • An Instant Pot is an electric pressure cooker with various settings
  • You can use an Instant Pot to steam, sauté, braise, and hold warm foods
  • An Instant Pot is a one-stop-shop to replace many kitchen gadgets
  • Using the build up of steam, the Instant Pot creates a high pressure chamber for the food
  • A pressure valve slips into place and steam is released through a lid vent
  • Food cook remarkably fast in the high pressure environment, allowing you to cook things that usually take a long time much more quickly
  • Because you are using the pressure cooker in an instant pot, the ratio for rice to water is the same all the time.
  • The ratio of rice to water when cooking in a pot varies based on the type of rice and the type of pot. But in the Instant Pot, it's always the same- making it easy to remember the recipe!

I use the basic, simple Instant Pot. Nothing fancy needed.

How To Make Easy, Perfect Rice in the Instant Pot

The full recipe is below, but I do have a few rules I go by when making rice in the Instant Pot:

  1. Always use the "Pressure Cook" setting and not the "Rice" setting. This may seem counterintuitive, but it's true. The Pressure Cook setting is the one you want
  2. The ratio of rice to water is ALWAYS equal by volume. It does not matter what kind of rice you are cooking. If you use 2 cups of rice, you will use 2 cups of water. Every time.
  3. This recipe uses a combination of high pressure cooking and slow release for the steam

This rice is great with things like my Clay Pot Tofu recipe. Give it a try!

Notes

If you want to increase the quantity, simply be sure to keep the same 1:1 ratio (by volume) of rice to water.  Because of this, it is fun to combine different types of rice.
